To accurately measure small objects at distances shorter than the specified maximum range, you need a rangefinder that is significantly more powerful. This is because the maximum range of all rangefinders is always measured against the simplest object that provides perfect reflectivity—a flat, large wall. So the practical maximum measurement distance is always shorter when measuring smaller objects!

A 600-meter rangefinder often struggles to measure the distance to a capercaillie already at a 150-meter distance, and it's even more challenging when trying to measure the distance to a seal in the water where only the head is visible.
